Time!
It’s such a convenient excuse as to why so many people aren’t living the life that they want. There is never enough time between work, the kids, the downtime?? And yet, occasionally you come across people who seem to have time on their side.
What do they know that you don’t? How do they find extra time to start a new business and still enjoy time with their family, still go to they gym or live that fulfilled life that you don’t seem to have time for?
The fact is we all have the same amount of time! We all have 24 hours in a day, 168 hours in a week, 730 hours in a month (on average) and 8,760 hours in a year.
Those people who are living the life that you want realise this and they make every hour count!
In each day the average Australian spends 7 hours at work, 8 hours sleeping, 55.5 minutes commuting (Payscale Australia Research), 1 hour on showering, dressing etc and 1 hour 45 minutes eating. Your times may differ slightly but you get the idea. That leaves almost 6 hours a day doing “other things”…
Those “other things” of course may also be important and/or necessary. For example, if you have kids, 2.5 hours could be spent with them doing homework, playing, talking etc around their school hours. You may also exercise, for 30 minutes per day. This now cuts you back to 3 hours of doing “other things”.
So what are your “other things”? What do you do for 3 hours per day, 21 hours per week, 90 hours per month (on average) and 1,095 hours per year that is more important than starting the lifestyle business you have been dreaming about?
I will also point out that on weekends you have an extra 14 hours where you are not working your day job.
That adds up to 3 hours per day, 35 hours per week… hmmm thats almost the same amount of time you dedicate to your full time job.
So where do all your extra hours go? Perhaps its time you worked that out!?!
These are the most common time wasters:
1. Emails – if you work in an office research suggests this can be as high as 61% of your work day plus what you do from your mobile device and personally outside of work hours (McKinsey Global Institute report).
2. Internet – a total of 1.2 hours per day is spent online searching, browsing etc with an average of 1.7 hours per day spent specifically on Facebook (Neilson Report, The Australian Online Landscape Review, April 2015)
3. TV – just under 3 hours per day average is spent zoning out to your favourite sitcom, news program or reality tv show (Australian Multi-Screen Report Q4 2014)
4. Chores – well by my calculations, you don’t have time for chores! phew!
Of course, there are still only 24 hours in a day so its not possible to do all of these things and if you do spend 3 hours a night watching tv, chances are you either multitask with social media or you squeeze in some time out of one of the other periods of your day.
So what do you do with your 3 extra hours a day and the ultimate question is:
If your future lifestyle depends on you dedicating at least one of those wasted hours each day to starting a business that will move you towards your ideal future lifestyle, are you willing to do it?
Will you take back the time you waste watching tv, or commit to only checking and dealing with emails in batches twice a day, or restrict the time spent checking in on what everyone else is up to on Facebook, in order to start living the life you deserve?
If the answer is yes, then say it out loud and commit to that decision! Then hang on because life’s about to get exciting!
You will not remember all the tv shows, or what Joe’s kids did at school in a year from now. However, by committing right now to reclaiming that extra hour, or 2 or even more per day in order to start the lifestyle business of your dreams, you will remember today! Because today will be forever the start of an amazing new journey.
